In winter moisture retained in porous brickwork freezes and expands, eating the brickwork slowly away. Ice forms in wet walls and expands, pushing bricks and renderings apart from within.
…and the damage is done.
Brick: Dehydration causes pointing to crack and powder.
Pebbledash: Pebbledash renderings crack and go ‘bald’.
Render: Other renderings crack and allow water to penetrate causing ‘blown’ areas.
These problems can be repaired by conventional means but often leave unsightly tell-tale scars.
Brickwork can be treated, but cavities cannot be successfully filled. Repointing is often necessary.
Textured renderings can be repaired but blemishes remain.
Other renderings need extensive patching also leaving blemishes.
